De 1880 \u00e0 1950, de tr\u00e8s nombreuses galeries ont \u00e9t\u00e9 fa\u00e7onn\u00e9es dans les falaises.<\/p>\n<p>Ces carri\u00e8res souterraines ont \u00e9t\u00e9 creus\u00e9es manuellement dans la colline par les ocriers. Dans les galeries, les ouvriers maniaient le pic, la pioche et la pelle \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re de la lampe \u00e0 carbure, et sortaient le minerai dans des brouettes. Les parois laissent percevoir les coups de pioches ou de pics. Creus\u00e9es parall\u00e8lement et perpendiculairement, les galeries se croisent d\u00e9limitant ainsi des piliers massifs soutenant la vo\u00fbte. Le d\u00e9veloppement de ces r\u00e9seaux souterrains atteint des dimensions impressionnantes, le r\u00e9seau de gal\u00e9rie existant sous la commune de Gargas se d\u00e9veloppe sur 40 kilom\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n<p>De nos jours, la derni\u00e8re carri\u00e8re d\u2019ocre d\u2019Europe en activit\u00e9 est toujours situ\u00e9e \u00e0 Gargas.<\/p>\n<\/div><ul class=\"fusion-checklist
