Lurs, Perched Village
The position of the village of Lurs is remarkable for two reasons. It is built on a spur of calcareous sandstone, locally known as Molasse or Pierre du Midi . This stone, containing fossil fragments, sand, and gravel, originated from a warm sea that covered Provence 20 million years ago. The relationship between this stone, dug, carved, collected, and inhabited, and humans has always been close.
The Moyenne Durance Fault
The village of Lurs is also notable because it overlooks the Durance plain. Between Château Arnoux and Mirabeau, the Durance flows in a straight line, guided by a deep fracture in the Earth’s crust, a fault—one of France’s major active faults known as the Moyenne Durance Fault. This fault plays a fundamental role in the geological history of the region and in shaping the landscape.

In the context of the commemoration of the 1909 Provence earthquake, an exhibition has been organized by the Park, the former Geology Museum of La Roque-d’Anthéron, and the Mining Museum of Gréasque. Some panels provide a deeper understanding of the Moyenne Durance Fault.
