The ruins of the castle of Cadenet overlook the village and are built on the edge of a limestone plateau. The castle and village are intricately intertwined with the stone, and rock-cut or troglodytic features (such as dwellings and cellars) are abundant in the area.
Location: Cadenet
Site type: Built heritage-monument, Scenic viewpoint, Remarkable village
Duration of visit: 2 hours
The village of Cadenet is nestled on the southern slopes of the Gardis plateau, which, along with the Villelaure hills, forms a series of small perched synclines along the Durance River.
This small massif is composed of marine deposits at the base, known as “Cucuron molasse,” transitioning to lacustrine and continental deposits (pebbles) at the top.
The Cucuron molasse is a coarse marine rock, yellowish, limestone rich in grains and gravel of all sizes, and filled with fossil debris such as oysters, scallops, corals, sea urchins, and shark teeth.
At the castle site, a layer rich in fossilized oysters can be observed throughout the ruins and remains. These are large, well-preserved oysters arranged regularly in a bed several tens of centimeters thick. They date back 10 million years.
